New York will get its first doses of swine flu vaccine next week

alg_swine_flu_splitUpstate counties will get about 100,000 doses, said State Health Commissioner Richard Daines.

New York City health officials don’t know how many the five boroughs will get in the first round of shipments.

Most of the first wave of vaccines are reserved for health care workers, who are mandated by a new state law to get inoculated before December. Some medical workers oppose the mandate, saying it’s a violation of their personal freedoms.

The first vaccines will be in the form of a nasal mist – not an injection – which is only recommended for healthy people between the age 2 and 49 who are not pregnant.

Injectable vaccines are expected to follow in staggered shipments.

Others eligible for the first doses are those considered “high risk” by the Centers for Disease Control, such as children and young adults, and people between ages 25 and 64 who have health conditions that could lead to medical complications from the flu and pregnant women.
