"Justice Tour" Update: Asheville, North Carolina!
"Earth Day 2008 found The Justice Tour in Asheville, North Carolina, which was ideal because it is a gorgeous piece of Earth. Wow. We flew in (on a little commuter jet - eek) to see rolling mountains, blossoms and pale green leaves on all the trees, drinking up springtime ... and cool home-made Justice Tour posters everywhere."

"Justice Tour" Update: New Orleans!
"The Justice Tour 2008's third stop was New Orleans, Louisiana! We arrived late at night, had a bunch of lost guitars and gear (found, fret not), dropped off our stuff at the hotel and walked down Bourbon Street to get a bite, which we ate mutely."

Writers Strike Ends!
For months, the people who write most of Hollywood's television shows and movies, have been on strike, struggling for a deal that gives them a fair cut of the money made on their works. The film and TV industries fought back hard, refusing to negotiate fairly. But today we see a great victory, the writers' union has won and a new contract will be signed soon.

Says filmmaker and writer Michael Moore: "This is a historic moment for writers in this country, a historic moment for labor in this country. To have the writers stand up and not give back a single thing, and in fact, to make [the studios] give things, is a real achievement. I would have thought it'd be autoworkers or ironworkers getting this victory but instead it's the people who got beat up in school for writing in their journals."

A Win and a Loss
In 1998, a southern California teen named Arthur Carmona was arrested for a crime he did not commit, and was sentenced to prison due to shady moves by law enforcement. Local journalists discovered his case, dug into the story, and began to rally for the freedom of a man they were now convinced was innocent. After 2 1/2 years of campaigning, Arthur’s sentence was overturned, and he was a free man. However the time in jail had done damage, and it took Arthur quite some time to rebuild his life and move on. He was presently training to become a firefighter, and working with the ACLU to fight for the rights of the wrongly convicted.

But we received the sad news this weekend that Arthur Carmona had been murdered, in an unrelated, and seemingly senseless attack.

Such tragedy can make us lose hope, or wonder what we’re fighting for. But the fact remains that despite his very premature death, thousands of people stood up to fight the injustice done to Arthur Carmona, and thanks to their combined efforts, he regained his freedom. We grieve for Arthur’s passing, but we must let our optimism and hope keep despair at bay.
