Axis in Action: Southern California
05/18/05

Lots of Axis of Justice activity in southern California this week, and beyond.

Axis-LA has teamed with Iraq Veterans Against the War to host an anti-war protest on May 20th on at the SE corner of Wilshire and Western prior to the Audioslave concert at the Wiltern Theater.

Axis of Justice will also have a booth at this Saturday's "KROQ Weenie Roast" concert fest, at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. For more info about that event, go to www.KROQ.com.

Axis-LA will also begin its "Host a peace vigil at your school" program soon, please check back for details.

This weekend, Axis-SBR (San Bernardino/Riverside) will be participating in the "30-Hour Famine". Students from Rubidoux High School will be refusing all food for 30-hours, from 4:00pm May 20th through 10:00pm May 21st, to raise awareness about global poverty and starvation. You can sponsor the fasting students, or donate money to their cause by calling (951) 784-4190 or (951) 377-3239. All money raised will go to end hunger in Kenya, and to help rebuild tsunami-ravaged Asia.

System of a Down and KROQ-FM Present "Souls 2005" Benefit Concert
04/24/05

"We call this 'Souls' because there are all these souls that aren't at rest. Their deaths have been overlooked."

Multi-Platinum-selling group SYSTEM OF A DOWN will headline “Souls, 2005,” a benefit concert presented by Los Angeles radio powerhouse, KROQ-FM, and held in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 24 at the Universal Amphitheatre. All tickets for the concert will be priced at $45.00 and will go on sale at 10:00AM on Saturday, March 12 at the Universal Amphitheatre box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including Tower Records, Robinsons-May, Wherehouse, Ritmo Latino, http://www.ticketmaster.com, and http://hob.com/. Doors are at 7:00PM and the show will begin at 8:15PM; support acts and other details will be announced shortly.

This is the third “Souls” benefit concert that System of a Down has organized and headlined, and as before, the four band members - Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian, Shavo Odadjian and John Dolmayan - have earmarked the proceeds from “Souls, 2005” to benefit organizations that work to eradicate genocides across the globe. This includes the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), an organization that supports legislation in the U.S. Congress to recognize the Armenian Genocide that was perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire during World War 1. During this first genocide of the 20th century, 1.5 million Armenians were annihilated and hundreds of thousands deported from their ancient homeland. April 24th was chosen as the date for the concert as this year, it commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The members of System of a Down, who are of Armenian descent, all lost family members and family history to the Armenian Genocide. "Because so much of my family history was lost in the Armenian Genocide," said Malakian, "my grandfather, who was very young at the time, doesn't know his true age. How many people can say they don't know how old they are?" Tankian, Dolmayan and Odadjian all identify their grandparents' memories as the only links they have to their respective family heritages, as most of their families were obliterated during the Armenian Genocide.

Why should System of a Down fans be concerned about the Armenian Genocide, something that happened nearly one-hundred years ago and far away from the United States?

"It's important for people to be aware of the Armenian Genocide," explained Tankian, "and that those actions continue to be covered up by the Turkish government, the U.S. State Department, Turkey's allies in the defense and oil industries, and by our present U.S. Administration. Had the Armenian Genocide been acknowledged as a Crime Against Humanity as it was, Hitler might not have thought he could get away with the Jewish Holocaust. History does and will repeat itself, unless we stop that cycle."

L.A. Benefit Concert For "Food Not Bombs"
02/18/05

AXIS OF JUSTICE - Tom Morello (Audioslave) and Serj Tankian (System of a
Down) will present a benefit concert on Friday, February 18 at the Peace and Justice Center (2210 Lincoln Blvd., Venice, CA) for "Food Not Bombs"
Southern California chapters. Artists donating their time and talent for this benefit include Bad Acid Trip, Resistant Culture, Tom Morello as the Nightwatchman, and a host of local hip-hop acts. Keith McHenry, founder of Food Not Bombs is expected to MC the evening. Doors open at 7PM and admission is $5.00, which includes all the free vegetarian food you can eat. AXIS OF JUSTICE will also be collecting donations of canned food, blankets, and other supplies for the Oasis Shelter of San Bernardino.

"Axis of Justice is proud to be working with Food Not Bombs to help feed the homeless and hungry in the Los Angeles area," said Morello. "Concerts like this provide an excellent forum for politically motivated bands and fans to come together and have a great time while contributing to a most worthwhile cause. As the gulf between rich and poor grows wider in America, we will continue to fight for the basic rights of food and shelter for all people."

With "justice" for all people being the focus of the organization, Tankian and Morello have been on the frontlines as Axis of Justice since 2002. In early 2003, they broke city ordinances in Santa Monica by feeding the homeless around the Third Street Promenade; later that same year, Axis of Justice sponsored a benefit concert at the Roxy to help striking Southern California grocery workers and their families. While in New York for last year's Republican Convention, they joined activist/filmmaker Michael Moore on local radio station K-Rock and later performed at a pro-labor rally.
They host the monthly Axis of Justice Radio Network program on KPFK 90.7, and provide an "activist watering hole" to disseminate information at axisofjustice.org.
